The old town of Rethymnon is one of the best-preserved towns of the Renaissance. It is the center of modern Rethymnon, and it combines the oriental features of the Turkish period with Renaissance-style Venetian architecture.
A stroll through the alleys of the old town is like travelling backwards in time. Few places suggested to visit:
The Venetian harbour of Rethymnon, with its fishing boats, the famous lighthouse and the tavernas. The Venetian harbour is the ideal starting point for a tour of Rethymnon old town.
The Rimondi Fountain in the heart of the old town, where water runs from three lions' heads into three basins.
Porta Guora, the great gate of Rethymno, used to be the imposing entrance to the fortifications.
The Venetian Loggia, which was a meeting place for the Venetian officials. Nowadays, it houses the Archaeological Receipts Fund, where you can buy archaeological guide books and casts of important sculptures from all over Greece.
